‘Big Space’ Drill Sharpens Long Passes
Long passes are a necessity when your offense is spaced wide, ensure these passes are crisp and sharp, and don’t result in turnovers. MORE
Utilize a trailing post player as a passer and screener to lead to an in-close scoring opportunity the defense isn’t expecting
WHY USE THIS BASKETBALL PLAY
While a trailing post player keeps one of your bigs away from the hoop, it also removes a larger defender from under the basket as well. If you have a talented post who handles the ball well and knows how to pass, install this play immediately.
SET UP
With the point guard dribbling the ball on the right side, your post trails the play in the middle of the floor. The other three players are spread along the baseline.
HOW TO PLAY
The point guard passes back to the trailing post. The post then reverses the ball as the player from the left corner relocates to the wing (1).
The post then runs pick-and-roll action as the ball handler attacks the middle of the floor with the dribble. To create space, the opposite post comes high as the pick-and-roll occurs (2).
The ball handler executes either a bounce pass or quick chest pass to the rolling post for the easy score (3).
TECHNIQUE
The post remains in motion the entire time, first to catch the ball then to screen and finally to roll to the hoop. This player remains focused the entire time and always is moving toward the hoop.
