Boston’s Brad Stevens’ Shooting Set

Grab this set from one of the best play designers in the game – Boston’s Brad Stevens – to use a decoy off a double screen in setting up a shooter.

Why use Brad Stevens’ shooting set

  • A lot of teams love running a double screen to the weakside to have a shooter come free across the lane. This set starts with that action, but is effective as one of thescreeners turns and picks off the other screener’s defender as he pops to the perimeter.

Setting up this set

  • The point guard is dribbling on the right side with a player posting on that side. The other three players are on the weak side, including a decoy shooter in the corner.

How to play

  • 4 and 5 move into position to set a weak-side doublescreen for 2.
  • 2 curls around the double screen flashing through the lane with hands up looking for a pass.
  • 2 is a decoy [1].
  • 4 then turns and picks off 5’s defender.
  • 5 pops outside the 3-pointline.
  • 2 and 3 clear outside the lane.
  • 1 passes to 5 [2].
  • 5 shoots on the catch as 4 holds the screen.
  • 3 moves into rebounding position [3].

How to perfect the technique for Stevens’ shooting set

  • The play works perfectly because 4’s defender already is playing on the low side, so when 4 picks off 5’s defender, there is no one left to guard 5’s shot.
  • Switch 3 and 5 to place a better shooter in position (if that is the case), provided 3 is a good screener.
