Press, Steal & Score

Rick Pitino’s Louisville squad runs many varieties of the full-court press – try this one to force the offense into a turnover and an easy score for your team.

WHY USE THIS DEFENSIVE BASKETBALL PLAY
Add this to your defensive playbook to force the offense into poor decisions. Louisville used this press early in its 79-63 drubbing of Western Kentucky last month.

SET UP
Don’t cover the inbounder but place two defenders close to the point guard and another behind. Drop two defenders near mid-court to guard against a long outlet pass.

HOW TO PLAY
As the point guard breaks to the left, the defender to the left steps in front while the trailing defender guards the backside. The second inbounding option is coming hard from the right side of the court. Have the defender initially positioned in front of the point guard cover the cutter [1]. Now, the point is double-teamed, both long options are covered and the cutter from the right is shielded from the inbounder [2]. The cutter tries to get position under the hoop and the inbounder forces a pass, which is intercepted by the defender. On the turnover, your closest player to the ball cuts to the hoop, receives a pass and scores an uncontested layup [3].

TECHNIQUE
Not guarding the inbounder allows you to double-team the point guard.
